Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Maiden Speech
During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.
The Basic Tests of Leadership
Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
