This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
