The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Team

England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several past matches.

During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers is still the probable choice.

Spin Options Weighed

There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.

But McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
