The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare this decision promptly following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will forever remain within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
