New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
