Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."

Newsom's time in office as governor ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Trump Critic

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the former president's team, leveraging his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand the party's congressional seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about Californians in a weekend segment on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to pull taxpayer dollars from California and warned suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," Duffy stated, following a recent fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.

His administration pointed out that the federal government had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under federal law.

Duffy had previously announced he was blocking additional funds from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Strong Response from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office said in a previous comment countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Political Future

A this month's survey found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom ought to campaign for president in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor stated while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
