French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
