A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to check the site from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
