American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.
