The deceased of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezing appliances in an apartment in western Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The cooling units were concealed behind a false wall in the apartment, situated in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were arrested in June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the female victim, informed police last week that there had been an incident—but disputed intentional killing.

Speaking to the media earlier, a official for the state prosecutor stated the pair were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

The identities of those involved have been withheld by police, in following local legislation.

The vanishing of the mother and child was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who is based in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Investigators revealed the male associate told them at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.

Her bank card was then found to have been used abroad on multiple occasions.

Yet when investigators examined the woman's home, her smartphone was discovered.

An individual also claimed overhearing a disturbing sound in the apartment, and cries of "mum" on the day the two were presumed to have gone missing.

An expanded police investigation was initiated, with investigators finding various messages originating from the mother's device—such as a resignation letter to her company and communications to the male associate.

Authorities stated a four-figure sum was also sent to the suspect.

Katja Tersch told the press on Tuesday that a rented space had been rented out before the victims' disappearance and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.

The brothers extracted the cooling unit from the unit on the day the victims disappeared, the official revealed. And a week later, they obtained an additional appliance.

Authorities say they consider this points to the demise were premeditated.

"The reason for their demise could not be determined due to the condition of the remains," the official commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the precise timeline is not yet known, but the remains were professionally hidden and went unnoticed during a previous house search.

Although the suspects were taken into custody in the summer, it was only on the 12th of November that the suspect confessed to an event and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any plan to cause death, officials stated.

Meanwhile, his brother confessed to a attempt to hide evidence but rejected knowledge of a homicide.

The two suspects are at this time in custody awaiting trial in jails in separate locations, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

Via a shared communication, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative said the "alleged double murder... represents the sudden and brutal end of two individuals and reveals a brutal scheme".

"Female individuals are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are of the female gender," they continued.

"Femicides are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
