Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Links as Pure Gossip

Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh talk linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".

The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the ongoing speculation about his next move.

Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract running until 2029, with a potential extension option.

"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."

He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."

Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.

Strain After Previous Comments

Maresca's most recent comments come after he referred to a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.

Those initial remarks had fueled widespread speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.

When asked if he had discussed matters with the club's leadership, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we talk about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."

The Italian however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".

In more positive news, Maresca revealed that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.

Perspective: An 'Open Wound'

The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that still create unease.

While there has been no deepening of the situation publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unresolved.

The mood during these media briefings has become notably awkward, raising concerns it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent beginning to the season.

Chelsea's sporting position is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better Champions League draw with good performances in their remaining matches.

The prevailing uncertainty is whether this off-field situation might eventually disrupt a team that was just starting to look cohesive.
