As Swimmers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, noticed cracking sounds ringing out around the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, speaking to a duo who had run up the slope soaked, she noticed someone moving up behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every instinct would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Chaos

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of heroism in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and paramedics caring for dozens of victims.

Local Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the incident becoming a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen taking action, such as rushing into the water to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the tragedy, statements of gratitude flooded in. A social media message expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The team of lifeguards issued a message, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our team,” the group wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the violence began through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
